Away we go: Wyoming

image

Our November catalog travels took us to the wilds of Wyoming, where land meets sky and both seem to go on forever. The amazing landscapes you’ll see throughout the book and in the video below were photographed on location at Turtle Ranch, just outside of Jackson Hole—the beautiful horses featured are residents of the ranch as well. If the catalog hasn’t quite made it to your house yet, you can see all of November’s new arrivals right now, right here.

Yes, cashmere is soft, luxurious, and screams, “Look at me! I paid $200 for this lightweight sweater I could have gotten for $40 at a clothing exchange boutique!” But do you know how we get cashmere?

Cashmere comes from goats, mostly in Mongolia and China. In 1990, there were only 5 million goats in Mongolia. In 2010, their numbers rose to almost 14 million.

So lots of people love cashmere. However, more goats mean less grass for natural herbivores like antelopes and wild donkeys. Which means less food for the endangered snow leopard and wild yak. Wildlife like the leopard also have to deal with herd dogs and goat diseases.

Fortunately, goat herders are taking measures toward conservation, building protected herding spots to prevent predation and lower the spread of grazing. They’re even vaccinating their goats.

So: a lavish, throw-away garment? Or a biologically diverse (and pretty) planet? You decide.
